Communion Meditation 2/17/19

One of the things that I’ve come to enjoy at our church is taking communion every week. Growing up, our church would do the Lord’s Supper for special occasions (Christmas, Easter, etc.) and a few other times during the year, but it wasn’t regular. At Highland Park, we do it every Sunday. We also have someone stand up and give a ~2-3min thought to set the tone of the moment. That person changes every week – it could be an elder, or someone on staff, or someone that volunteers with the church consistently. Our music minister called me and asked if I wanted to do one, and I said yes. Because the communion time isn’t recorded, I wanted to share my meditation with y’all.

We all make things. It could be anything: a painting, a birdhouse, a blog post. Whatever the medium, we find ways to express our creativity. However, being human, we make mistakes. The paint smears when we run our brush over it before it has dried. We cut a piece of wood too short for the birdhouse. Whatever the case may be, mistakes are often part of the things we make.

God sees us as those creations, those things He has made. He doesn’t make mistakes like we do, but we sin and make mistakes of our own. Yet, because of Christ’s sacrifice, our Father doesn’t see those mistakes, those sins in our lives. Hebrews 9:14 says “then… the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse[s] our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!” Our Father doesn’t see the smeared paint of sin in our lives. He sees the blood of His Son when we stand before Him. We remember that sacrifice now.
